El Tinieblo Mezcal is an ultra premium artisanal product. It is hand-distilled in the state of Tamaulipas by Master Mezcalero Don Balthazar Cruz. For generations, El Tinieblo has been in the forefront of mezcal culture, conservation and maguey plant processing.

Ranch El Tinieblo, where the maguey grows and the mezcal is made, is based on sustainability and the desire to improve the economy of this rural state.

Their approach provides employment for seven families in the Jiménez area as well as for a number of local tradesmen who assist in the construction and maintenance of their local palenque.

They plant and harvest all of the maguey used in the creation of our small-batch mezcal and use no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers.

  • Vinification and maturation
El Tinieblo respects the pre-Hispanic tradition of the fermentation process, allowing the natural yeasts in the air to help ferment the mashed maguey, which rests in open-air oak casks. This process offers a rare moment of tranquility at the usually bustling ranch as we slow down and let the bacteria do its job.
With care, the mash is moved the into copper still handful by handful. Although labor intensive, it is from this stage of the process that they derive the final product’s rich complex flavour of roasted maguey, caramelised sugar, roasted fruit, flowers, vegetation and earth.

The traditional wood fire double copper still distillation process at ranch El Tinieblo is a time to give thanks and feel gratitude for the bounty by offering the first few drops of distilled mezcal to the earth. This ritual is part of every distillation and has been carried on for generations.
